TCM Therapeutic Actions: Tonifies Middle Warmer Qi; raises Yang; adjusts and fortifies Spleen and Stomach. TCM Indications: Fatigue, Stomach and Spleen Qi deficiency, chronic low fever, organ prolapse, chronic bleeding, chronic diarrhea, other chronic disorders; recovery after illness or operation, with the symptoms of fever with perspiration; also for headache with aversion to cold, thirst with desire for hot drink, short breath and disinclination to talk, and loss of appetite, lassitude of the extremities. Modern Indications: Hypotension, chronic headache, functional disturbance of the autonomic nerves, chronic gastroenteritis, myasthenia gravis, gastroatonia, prolapsed rectum or uterus, floating kidney, chronic bleeding, postpartum subinvolution of the uterus, menorrhagia, allergic purpura. Contraindications: Contraindicated with pregnancy and cancer. TCM Contraindications: Not for use in Yin deficiency or interior Heat. In general, the dose of this formula should be the smallest dose that provides the intended effect. Prolonged use or overdose may consume Yin. Pharmaceutical Interactions: This formula may INCREASE the effects of Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOI’s), anticoagulants and antiplatelets; may increase potassium loss with diuretics and laxatives, which may interfere with antiarrhythmics. This formula may DECREASE plasma glucose levels, and may decrease the effects of antihypertensive agents, antidiabetic medications, and scopolamine. This formula may have estrogen-like activity, causing hypertension and fluid retention when used with oral contraceptives. May decrease endogenous testosterone levels in men and women with polycystic ovary disease. May increase the half-life of systemic corticosteroids. May increase T-cell activity and may lower the immunosuppressant effects of cyclophophamide, cyclosporine and corticosteroids. May increase the antiviral effects of acyclovir against herpes. Hinesol, a component, may increase strength of omeprazole. May lessen overall availability of tolbutamide. Contains constituents that increase activity of the sympathetic nervous system; use with caution in those using antihypertensive, antidiabetic, antihyperthyroid and/or antiseizure medications. Comments: This famous classical formula addresses any physical condition related to or due to Stomach and Spleen deficiency, like insomnia or side effects of chemotherapy and radiation. Recommended Usage: 2-3 tablets twice daily with warm water.
