Breech Baby Treatment – Sometimes You’ve Just Gotta Smile 5/5 (35)

Recently, I had a patient come in as a referral from her OBGYN. She was 35 weeks pregnant and her baby was “Frank Breech.” Her doctor told her that she would probably have to have a c-section, but that she might consider seeing an acupuncturist first. She asked her doctor if acupuncture really works for turning breech babies, and got this answer: “I don’t know for sure, but you might as well give it a try because it can’t hurt.”

It is typical to treat with moxa for up to 10 days at Bladder 67 to turn a breech baby, which was my planned protocol. When she arrived she was complaining of low back pain and heartburn, so I decided to graph her, just for fun and see what was showing up energetically. This is what her graph looked like:

The graph looked like it had characteristics of a belt block, so I decided to look at the upper/lower body ratios. AcuGraph was a very helpful tool for me to see that she was leaning toward excess energy in the lower body. Typically I would have only done the moxa, but opening up a belt block made perfect sense for this patient. It would be awfully hard for a baby to turn if the energy were blocked in the middle of the body. I needled TE 5 and GB 41 and then did 20 minutes of moxa at BL 67. She came back two days later and her graph was greatly improved!

This patient continued with moxa at home for the next 5 days. When Mom called me, giggling with excitement, to say that the baby had turned and was in perfect position for labor, I just smiled. I smiled again when the OBGYN asked for a stack of my business cards.

Another day in the life of an acupuncturist….  Life is good!.

  2. Many Thanks Kimberly for sharing again your wonderful experience. Please, can you just bring some light into my work and tell me (still a bit confused), if we can use AcuGraph on pregnant woman, because I was told not to do so, like to be cautious with clients with cardio-stimulants. Or is there a timeframe (like how many weeks of pregnancy), when we can’t and when we can use the magic of AcuGraph. Thank you in advance for your kind reply, if you will have a chance. Kindly Elsa

    1. Hello Elsa,

There is no problem using AcuGraph during pregnancy. I use it on pregnant mom’s all of the time. You are correct about using caution with those using a pace maker. I hope this helps.

  3. Thank you for your words on treating pregnany. I often have mums with cold feet and bottoms; now after reading your post, I think there must be a belt block causing this. Do you have any more info in this area please? Regards

    1. Hello Laine,

I have come to realize that almost every pregnant woman has issues with the Dai Mai during pregnancy. I have had good luck with cold feet by treating SP 6 and GB 39–which are group luo points for the yin and yang channels of the leg.

  4. Hellow mam its wonderful n very excitment experience of acupuncture therapy n how acu graph help in diagnosis thans a lot,

  5. I appreciate SP 6 & GB 39 for cold feet, but I suspect you wouldn’t want to use SP 6 during pregnancy?

    1. Very good point Dr. Jim. I have had specialized training with Dr. Debra Betts from New Zealand for pregnancy related acupuncture. You are absolutely correct that in most text books, SP 6 is listed as a caution point in pregnancy. Debra informed me that you should use caution and never drain this point during pregnancy, and to avoid using it in combination with the points that are used to induce labor. She teaches that she will use the point only “as necessary” during pregnancy.

If I use SP 6 during pregnancy I am VERY cautious, I don’t treat it for long, I don’t combine other labor inducing points with it, and sometimes I simply use a laser or seed instead of a needle. But I do use SP 6 for cold hands and feet, and also for edema (with the precautionary measures that I listed previously).

      Thanks for your insight.

  6. Please clarify. if the energy levels are high in most of the meridians will harm the patient.

    1. What you are looking for is the energy level in relation to each channel. If all of the channels are running high, that is okay. Some people just have higher readings than others. If you have a person who has several high channels and several low ones, then you want to treat to bring all of the meridians into balance. If they are “all high” then that person is still in balance. I hope this answers your questions.

  7. Resp mam/sir,
i like to know how this acugraph works, whatis the real difference between hand pulse reading diagonise and acugraph. What is the rate of acugraph.

    1. Hello Doctor,

AcuGraph is a device to measure skin resistance at acupuncture points–and give treatment recommendations based on the the findings of excess, deficiency, and splits. Research has shown that when there are blockages in the acupuncture meridians that the skin resistance changes and can be measured for diagnostic purposes. I come from a background in Traditional Chinese Medicine and was trained in pulse diagnosis. I have found through clinical experience that AcuGraph mirrors what I am finding in the pulses. You can find an array of information on our website about the AcuGraph system. I suggest that you read previous blog posts for a wealth of knowledge.

We are happy to answer any questions which you may have.
