I’ll come right on out and say it: I hate waiting<\/em>. Whether stuck in a line at the grocery store, sitting at a red light in traffic, or holding on the phone line to speak with a real human when I call my bank – waiting always feels like a waste of my valuable time.<\/p>\n

However, even though I dislike waiting, I’ve found that some waiting is much more difficult to endure. Here’s a personal example: I’ve always wanted to learn how to fly a private plane. As a gift, my wife recently bought me a certificate for a “discovery flight” that would let me have a chance to see firsthand what it was really like to fly with an instructor and earn a pilot’s license. While not a real flying lesson, this session would let me meet the instructor, learn about the parts of a plane and their functions, and ride along on a short flight. When I called the instructor to schedule, he let me know that I’d be flying the plane!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Now, this put me somewhat ill at ease (ok, I had trouble sleeping the night before) because I was afraid of what might happen if I did something wrong while at the controls of the plane. I knew that the instructor would be right there with me, but those movies we’ve all seen where the pilot has a heart attack kept me sleepless…<\/p>\n

Would I Wind Up Landing Like This?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

When I arrived at the flight school, I walked into a dingy, dirty, and frankly ugly waiting room. The mismatched furniture had been slung catastrophically around the perimeter. Ugly steel desks from the ’70s crouched in the middle of the room, and the art on the walls consisted of scary pictures of World War II fighter planes in combat (guns blazing, missiles streaking across the sky, explosions, etc). Standing there waiting for the instructor to put me in a plane and have me fly it did NOT help put my mind at ease about what I had gotten myself into.<\/p>\n
