{"id":15392,"date":"2015-01-20T14:58:14","date_gmt":"2015-01-20T21:58:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.miridiatech.com\/news\/?p=15392"},"modified":"2018-05-27T19:47:10","modified_gmt":"2018-05-28T01:47:10","slug":"acupunctures-quiet-controversy-tcm-vs-meridian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.miridiatech.com\/news\/2015\/01\/acupunctures-quiet-controversy-tcm-vs-meridian\/","title":{"rendered":"Acupuncture&#8217;s Quiet Controversy &#8211; TCM vs Meridian Therapy"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>In my last blog I presented you with three questions:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">WHAT is Meridian Therapy acupuncture?<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">HOW is it different from TCM acupuncture?<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">WHY wasn\u2019t this taught in Acupuncture School?<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you missed it, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/wp.me\/pA5CI-3Zf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">click here<\/a><\/strong><\/span> to go back and catch up.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Okay, let&#8217;s pick up where I left off.\u00a0TCM acupuncture is a recent construct.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>In the first decade of the People\u2019s Republic of China (1950s), TCM universities and teaching hospitals were designed and created to be the equal of Western medicine schools and hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>The herbalists were firmly in control, and promoted a style of acupuncture that corresponded with the TCM herbal approach. Their objective was to establish a unified curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>Other acupuncture styles, including <em>Nan Jing<\/em> Meridian Therapy, disappeared, but were able to survive in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Problems with <\/strong><strong>TCM<\/strong><strong> Acupuncture.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Following my return from China, I realized that TCM acupuncture posed several difficulties.<\/p>\n<p><strong>First<\/strong>, it was very painful for the patient. Needling was deep, with rotations that would grab fibers and cause pain with twisting. Appreciated as <em>de qi<\/em> (\u201cthe arrival of <em>qi\u201d<\/em>), it works by injuring local tissue enough to attract healing <em>qi<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Second<\/strong>, TCM acupuncture is effective in China in no small part because patients come to the clinic three times a week. North American patients can hardly afford to come this often, and once weekly is not as effective.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thirdly,<\/strong> for internal disorders, it is rare that patients arrive with one complaint (eg, \u201cepigastric pain\u201d) that an all-inclusive single <em>zang-fu<\/em> differentiation would address. Instead, the patient comes in with epigastric pain, plus . . . insomnia, constipation, neck pain, headache, menstrual irregularity, etc, etc.<\/p>\n<p>North American patients come in with multiple complaints, often involving fatigue and various pains spread around the body.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do we chase multiple complaints in an isolated fashion<\/strong>, or do we look for a unified approach that deals with a myriad of symptoms?<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Turning to Japanese-style <\/strong><strong>Meridian<\/strong><strong> Therapy. <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-15414\" src=\"http:\/\/www.miridiatech.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chinese-and-Japanese-needles.jpg\" alt=\"Chinese and Japanese needles\" width=\"293\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.miridiatech.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chinese-and-Japanese-needles.jpg 475w, https:\/\/www.miridiatech.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Chinese-and-Japanese-needles-300x231.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 293px) 100vw, 293px\" \/>Realizing that TCM acupuncture was too painful and too simplistic for the typical patient, I decided to return to my roots in Meridian Therapy.<\/p>\n<p>I began by studying with Dr. Miki Shima, a Japanese practitioner form northern California, who exposed me to the efficacy and subtlety of Japanese needling. This technique employs superficial insertion with very thin needles, insuring patient comfort.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Shima explained that <em>de qi<\/em> in Chinese acupuncture means that the patient feels and reports localized pain and distension, due to strong twisting and thrusting. He went on to say that in Japanese acupuncture, the sensation of <em>de qi <\/em>belongs to the practitioner, who feels the arrival of <em>qi<\/em> in his or her fingers and hand. The patient should not feel any discomfort.<\/p>\n<p>Patients new to my clinic always remark that my acupuncture is painless, almost invisible, and that they all had negative experiences with Chinese style.<\/p>\n<p>But is it effective? In Japan, patients, who pay for acupuncture out of pocket, can come in no more than once a week. The Japanese have discovered that in using Meridian Therapy as the root, and combining with an effective branch therapy, treatments performed once weekly were as effective as the three times weekly in the Chinese clinics.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What is <\/strong><strong>Meridian<\/strong><strong> Balancing? Why Is It So Effective? <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-15416\" src=\"http:\/\/www.miridiatech.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Qigong3.jpg\" alt=\"Qigong3\" width=\"393\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.miridiatech.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Qigong3.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.miridiatech.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Qigong3-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 393px) 100vw, 393px\" \/>Meridian Therapy is a two-pronged approach, treating both root and branch. The root is the meridian balance, and the branch is the focused treatment for the main complaint.<\/p>\n<p>For the branch, we can choose from many disciplines: TCM point combinations, Japanese symptomatic treatment, ear acupuncture, Master Tung points, Korean hand acupuncture, etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why is root treatment so important? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Basically, if the body is in balance, which is to say energetic equilibrium with good movement of qi and blood, it can maintain health or promote self-healing.<\/p>\n<p>The starting point is appreciating the importance of the \u201cenergy cycle\u201d: knowing that energy circulates through the twelve primary channels in a specific sequence.<\/p>\n<p>If this energy circulates in an unobstructed way, in a continuous sequence without interruptions, without some channels becoming excess while others become deficient, then the body stays healthy. When the network is in balance, the <em>qi <\/em>is allowed<em> to <\/em>distribute equitably, radiating out from the channels to energize tissue along its path, and allowing sufficient <em>qi<\/em> to reach the organs.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I saw patients get better in half as many treatments!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Conversely, all health problems, whether due to trauma or organ dysfunction, will manifest as imbalances in the meridian sequence. Some channels will be excess, while others will be deficient. A person has a set amount of <em>qi<\/em>, and imbalances that are excess are matched by imbalances that are deficient.<\/p>\n<p>If we can restore the channels to relative equality, the body will hold the correction, allowing a more lasting effect.
